A Galaxy S25 that will not charge is usually telling you which link has failed: the charger, the cable, a moisture lockout, a setting, the USB-C port or the battery. If it still will not take a charge from a known-good charger, bring it to our Piccadilly Circus bench for a free diagnostic.
Why won't my Galaxy S25 charge?
The main causes of a Galaxy phone not charging are the battery, the charging cable, the power adapter, a wireless charger, the charging port, moisture detection, or device temperature [1]. That is Samsung's list. The mistake people make is treating it as seven equal suspects. It is not. Most of them sit outside the phone, or are the phone protecting itself, and you can rule them out at home without a screwdriver.
So work from the outside in. Every step removes one suspect. Skip one and you risk paying for a battery when the real fault was a frayed cable.
Is it the charger, the cable or the phone?
Prove the accessories first. Samsung warns that low quality or non-approved chargers and cables may cause slow charging or intermittent disconnection [1], and an S25 that charges for a second and drops out is often just that. Swap one thing at a time, or you will not know what fixed it:
- Charge something else with your adapter and cable. If that device charges, both accessories are alive and the fault is in the phone.
- Keep the adapter, change the cable. Samsung says long-used cables should be checked or replaced if necessary, because damaged or corroded ports or cables may cause slow charging or heat generation [1].
- Keep the cable, change the adapter. Fast charging is not supported on a normal charger [1], so a slow charge on an old plug is not a fault.
- Restart the phone. If it still has power, a soft reboot resets temporary memory and tells you whether the problem is software related [1]. Hold Power and Volume Down until it restarts.
Then let the phone test itself. Samsung Members runs a battery and charging diagnosis that helps identify whether the issue is the cable, wireless charging or battery condition [1]. Open Members, tap Support, then Phone diagnostics, and run Battery status, Cable charging and Wireless charging. Do not treat the result as a tick box. Treat it as a fork: the test that fails names the link to look at next.
Check the settings too. Samsung says to confirm Fast charging is switched on under Settings, Battery, Charging settings [1]. And stop gaming or streaming while it is plugged in: high performance apps raise the temperature and slow charging down [1].
What does the water drop icon mean on a Galaxy S25?
The water drop icon means the phone has detected moisture in the USB port and has stopped charging on purpose. If moisture exceeds a set point, charging is not supported, as a safety measure to protect the phone from damage and corrosion [2]. This is the phone working correctly. Do not fight it.
Unplug it. Samsung's instruction is to wipe the phone with a dry cloth or gently shake it with the port facing down, then leave it on a cloth somewhere well ventilated or in front of a fan [2]. Water will naturally evaporate from the charging port within approximately 1 to 2 hours [3]. If anything other than fresh water got in, such as a drink or the sea, Samsung says to rinse the port in fresh water and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth [3].
You can get the icon without ever touching water. Samsung notes that high humidity, a kitchen, a bathroom, or moisture inside the cable itself can trigger it [2]. So try a different cable in a drier room before you assume the port is wet.
If the phone is bone dry and the icon will not go away, clear the USB cache. Go to Settings, Apps, tap the filter icon, turn on Show system apps, open USB Settings, then Storage, then Clear cache [2]. Most guides miss this step, and it is the one that separates a stuck software flag from a genuinely wet or corroded port.
Should you clean the charging port yourself?
Yes, but only with a soft brush. Samsung says dust or debris stuck in the charging port can block charging for safety, and to remove it using a soft brush [1]. Its moisture guidance is blunter: do not insert any object into the charging port, because it can damage the port [3].
That is the line most fix lists get wrong. They tell you to dig the port out with a toothpick, a SIM pin or a needle. Do not. If a soft brush does not shift it, the next tool is ours, not yours.
Read the port while you are there. If the plug does not seat fully, suspect debris. If it charges only at one angle, or the plug feels loose, that is mechanical wear, and our guide to a loose Galaxy S25 charging port walks through that fork. A port that looks green, dark or crusted is corrosion, and it wants a bench, not a brush.
Do not open the phone to replace the port yourself. Samsung's self-repair charging-port programme covers the Galaxy S20, S21 and S22 [4], not the S25, and it warns that damage caused by an improper repair attempt by anyone other than a Samsung-certified provider may not be covered by the warranty [4].
The S25 charging split test
This is the order we recommend for an S25 that will not charge. Run it yourself first. Each answer points at one link in the chain, so you know what you are paying for before anyone quotes.
- Nothing charges from your adapter and cable: the accessories have failed. Replace them; the phone is probably fine.
- Water drop icon, phone wet: moisture lockout. Dry it for 1 to 2 hours and do not plug it in again until the icon clears.
- Water drop icon, phone dry: try another cable, a drier room, then clear the USB cache. If it persists after all three, the port needs inspection.
- Charges wirelessly but not on the cable: the battery is taking charge, so the fault is in the wired path. Samsung confirms wireless charging is not affected by moisture or foreign objects in the port [3], which makes this the cleanest port test you can run at home.
- Charges only at one angle, or the plug wobbles: worn port. Stop wiggling it and get it inspected.
- Stops at exactly 80%: a battery protection setting, not a fault. See below.
- No wired charge, no wireless charge, Members flags the battery: this is a battery or board question, and it is the point to stop testing and book a battery replacement diagnostic.
The pattern across all of these is simple. When the phone refuses to charge and tells you why, with an icon, a setting or a single failed test, the fix is usually outside the phone or behind a menu. When it refuses silently on every charger and every method, the fault is inside, and home testing has done its job.
Why does my Galaxy S25 stop charging at 80%?
A Galaxy that stops at 80% is usually doing what it was told. On One UI 6.1 or later, Battery protection has three modes, and in Maximum mode the battery will stop charging when it reaches 80% [5]. Basic mode stops at 100% and waits until the level falls to 95% before charging again [5], which can look like charging has stalled.
Check Settings, Battery, Battery protection before you book anything [5]. Samsung's point is that keeping a battery at a full 100% charge for a long time can reduce its lifespan [5], so leave protection on if 80% gets you through the day. Switch it off only when you need the full charge.
What to do next
Run the split test in order and stop at the first step that explains the fault. If you reach the bottom of the list, stop charging attempts and bring the phone in rather than leaving it on a charger overnight hoping it wakes up. The same logic applies to other handsets; our Pixel 10 will not charge guide follows the same order.

FAQ
Why is my Galaxy S25 not charging when plugged in?
The usual causes are a faulty cable or adapter, debris in the USB-C port, a moisture lockout, a temperature limit, a charging setting, or the battery. Prove the accessories on another device, look for the water drop icon, then run the Samsung Members charging tests.
How do I fix the moisture detected warning on a Galaxy S25?
Unplug, shake it gently port-down, and let it dry in a ventilated spot for 1 to 2 hours. If the phone is dry and the warning stays, try another cable in a drier room, then clear the USB Settings cache in Apps with system apps shown.
Can I clean my Galaxy S25 charging port with a toothpick?
No. Samsung says to use a soft brush for debris and not to insert any object into the port. If a soft brush does not clear it, bring it in.
Does my Galaxy S25 need a new battery if it won't charge?
Not necessarily. Suspect the battery only when it fails on every charger, wired and wireless, and Samsung Members flags it. That is the point for a free diagnostic.
