A wet Pixel 10 needs four things from you in the next hour: turn it off, dry the outside, leave it to dry at room temperature, and do not charge it. If it powers on afterwards, back it up before anything else, then bring it to our Piccadilly Circus bench for a free diagnostic.

That order matters more than any trick you will read elsewhere. Pixel 10 water damage is often decided by what happens next: whether the phone was left running, whether it went on a charger, whether it went on a radiator. Get those three right and you keep your options open.

What should I do the moment my Pixel 10 gets wet?

Follow Google's own sequence and nothing more: lift it out of the water, turn it off, dry it with a soft cloth, and set it on a flat surface to finish drying at room temperature [1]. Each step has a reason.

  1. Turn it off. A powered board with water across it is the risk. Google's safety guide warns that liquids can cause a short circuit and overheating [2]. Hold the power button and switch it off rather than waiting to see if it copes.
  2. Wipe the outside, nothing inside. Do not push a cotton bud, tissue corner or pin into the USB-C port or the speaker grilles. Google's charging-port guidance says not to put anything into the port or the cable [3].
  3. Dry it flat, at room temperature. No hairdryer, no radiator, no oven. Google is explicit: if your device gets wet, do not attempt to dry it using an external heat source [2]. Skip the rice bowl too; it is not in Google's instructions, and grains end up in the port you are trying to keep clear.
  4. Do not charge it. Google says do not charge your device when it is wet, and that charging when moisture is present can cause fire, electric shock, injury or damage to the device [2]. Plugging it in "just to see" is the single most expensive mistake on this list.

Isn't the Pixel 10 waterproof?

No. The Pixel 10 is designed to comply with the IP68 dust and water protection rating under IEC standard 60529, and Google states in the same guide that the phone is not dustproof or waterproof [2]. IP68 is a description of the phone as it leaves the factory. It is not a promise about your phone today.

Google is plain about why: dust and water resistance are not permanent conditions and are diminished or lost over time through normal wear and tear, repair, disassembly or damage, and dropping your device may result in a loss of dust or water resistance [2]. That gives you a simple rule. If your Pixel 10 has ever been dropped hard, opened, or had a screen or battery replaced, treat it as a phone with reduced protection. A swim it would have survived new may not be survivable now.

Write down what it went into and for how long. Those are the first questions at diagnosis.

What does the "Liquid or debris in USB port" message mean?

It is a port warning. The phone has detected something in the USB-C port. It does not tell you whether the inside is wet, and it does not mean the phone is safe.

Google's steps are to unplug, check the port and cable, and if they are wet, turn off the phone and let it dry on a flat surface at room temperature [3]. If the port is clean and dry, wait a few minutes for the phone to show that it is OK to use the USB port. Only if the alert persists after that does Google suggest clearing the cache for USB settings under system apps [3].

The deadline is two hours. Google says to contact support if the liquid or debris message shows for two hours or more [3]. Use that as your decision line:

  • Warning clears inside two hours and the phone behaves normally: the port has dried. Back up, then watch it for the rest of the day.
  • Warning clears but something else is wrong: water reached further than the port. The symptom tells us which part; book the diagnostic.
  • Warning still showing after two hours on a dry, room-temperature surface: stop experimenting and bring it in. The port, or what sits behind it, needs looking at.

If the phone will not take a charge at all once it is dry, our guide to a Pixel 10 that will not charge walks through the cable and charger checks in order.

The wet Pixel 10 triage list

Water damage is not one fault; it is several faults with one cause. Once the phone is dry and back on, run this list to see what has failed.

  1. It will not switch on at all. Do not keep pressing the power button on a charger. If the phone was off before it got wet and stays dead after drying, the question becomes the data, not the phone. Bring it in for a free diagnostic and ask about data recovery before anyone talks about replacing it.
  2. It switches on but the screen is black, striped or flickering. If it rings or vibrates while the screen stays dark, the phone is running and the display is the suspect. Our guide to a Pixel 10 black screen with no image covers how to tell a display fault from a phone that has not booted.
  3. Sound is muffled, crackles or is missing. Let it dry fully at room temperature first and do not poke the grilles. If the sound is still wrong a day later, book it in as a speaker or microphone fault.
  4. The camera image is foggy or has a mark that will not wipe off. A mark on the outside wipes away. One that will not is on the inside of the glass, which tells you the water went past the outside of the phone. Book the diagnostic.
  5. It works, but drains, runs warm or restarts. These are the quiet ones, and the ones people ignore. Google's safety guide links liquid exposure to short circuits and overheating [2]; a phone that runs warm after a soaking has earned a check. Back up today.
  6. It works perfectly. Back it up anyway, and treat its IP68 protection as weaker than it was [2].

The pattern across all six is the same: the visible symptom points to the part, but the decision that protects you is the backup. Our judgement, not a statistic: never treat a phone that has been in water as fixed just because it switched back on. Back it up first, then decide.

How do I save my photos and data from a wet Pixel 10?

If the phone switches on, back it up before you do anything else, including before you hand it to anyone for repair. Google's own repair guidance says that before you send your phone in for repairs, back up your data and remove the SIM card [4].

A Pixel backs up to your Google Account: apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS and MMS messages [5]. To run one now, open Settings, go to Google, then All services, tap Backup and choose Back up now [5]. Photos and videos are handled by Google Photos, so open it and check that the backup has finished rather than assuming it has.

Keep it off the charger while it backs up. If the screen starts misbehaving partway through, stop and bring it in as it is.

If the phone will not switch on, do not try to force it or leave it on a charger overnight. Bring it in as it is. That is what our data recovery service is for, and it starts with the same free diagnostic.

Will Google's warranty cover a water-damaged Pixel 10?

Assume not. Google states that damage from accidents or external causes, such as water damage, is not covered by the warranty [1], and its safety guide says liquid damage voids the warranty [2]. IP68 is not a water-damage guarantee.

Know one more thing before you book any repair through Google. Its repair page says it has to repair all damages with the phone, whether covered by your warranty or not [4]. If your Pixel 10 has a wet board and a cracked corner, you are not choosing which one gets fixed. Decide with that in mind.

With us, the diagnostic is free, the price is fixed before any work begins, and if we cannot fix it, there is no fee.

What to do next

FAQ

How long should I leave a wet Pixel 10 to dry?

Google gives no single drying time for the phone. For the "Liquid or debris in USB port" message, its line is two hours: if the warning is still showing after that on a dry, room-temperature surface, get it checked.

Should I put my wet Pixel 10 in rice?

No. Google's instructions are to turn it off, dry it with a soft cloth and leave it flat at room temperature. Rice is not part of them, and grains can lodge in the USB-C port.

Can I charge my Pixel 10 after it got wet?

Not until the phone, the port and the cable connector are fully dry. Google warns that charging when moisture is present can cause fire, electric shock, injury or damage to the device.

Is water damage covered on a Pixel 10?

Google says water damage is not covered by the warranty and that liquid damage voids it. Get a free diagnostic and a fixed price before deciding on a repair.
